What you are deciding

The crew

Five people: two adults and three boys (~9, 6, and 4). Cub Scouts now, Boy Scouts later. Frequent short campouts and rarer long road trips.

The money frame

Willing to spend for longevity. Investment tent, not disposable big-box cabin. Still compare cost per year of use.

Shape + bunk tip

Want: rectangular cabin / wall / canvas with real standing room.

Skip: circus / big round dome styles (REI Base Camp class, bell tents).

A bunk cot may reclaim floor later. Light tip only: needs peak height and careful ladder/tip safety with littles. Do not let bunks drive the buy.

Leader Gazelle clue (updated)

Earlier pass treated “not the Overland” as likely. Fresh feedback: the leaders’ tent may have been Overland after all.

Leader-likely: T4 Overland, T4 Tandem Overland, or T8 Hub (no Overland SKU found for T8).
Overland is mostly the same shell plus footprint, all-terrain stakes, and a tougher duffle.

Still ask for a photo or bag tag (GT401 / GT451 / GT800 / GT450).

Same shell. Overland adds footprint, all-terrain stakes, tougher duffle (+weight to 34 lb). Too small as the only tent for five with gear. Fine as half of a twin+gazebo plan, or if leaders’ Overland was this size.

T8 Hub

Strong family pick

Two sleeping areas, zippered divider, 110 sq ft. Realistic comfort for five with gear. Heavy one-bag carry. Weakest storm story of the shortlist (guy everything; see Watch + Badlands write-up).

T4 Tandem & Tandem Overland

Screen-room pick

Same 110 sq ft class as T8; one side is a convertible screen room. Direct step-down from Tandem Overland if leaders bought the kit. Older name you may hear: T4 Plus.

Lighter 10×10

100 sq ft, 72 lb, poles only 54". Iconic Springbar. Tight for month-long living with five; strong if weekends dominate and you want USA canvas without the 10×14 mass.

Classic Jack 140

Value / Odyssey poles

Same 140 sq ft class for $1,399. Shorter 48" poles. Imported; some QC notes in reviews. Stove-jack option if you ever cold-camp.

Skyliner

Know it exists

Most volume and hot-tent readiness at 97 lb / $2,349. Overkill unless you commit to cold-weather stove camping.

Main cabin is Gazelle-T8-class for sleep; living story rides on the awning. Heavier pitch than Flex-Bow.

Basecamp extreme

Best standing room on the shortlist. Too heavy for typical Odyssey scout weekends unless you accept trailer/roof-box logistics.

Heat, kids, scout sites, bunk tip

Missouri summers and packed scout pads pull opposite ways. A single T8 or one canvas 10×14 is simpler on tight pads. Twin tents plus gazebo win on privacy once the boys want their own space.

If you add a bunk cot later, keep peak height in mind (Gazelle 78"; Springbar/Kodiak Flex-Bow ~6'6"; Kodiak Cabin 7.5'; White Duck walls 5' + tall peak). Ladder and tip-over risk with Jack and Roman. Bunks help floor, they do not pick the tent.

How the seats work

3rd row Magic Seat folds into the floor.
2nd row Magic Slide seats slide and remove; they do not stow in the floor.
Each 2nd-row seat is roughly 68 lb to lift out. Prefer slide-forward for weekends.
